Piedmont Neighborhood in Portland OR

History

With it’s subdivision platted in 1889 by edward Quackenbush, Piedmont was promoted as “The Emerald, Portland’s Evergreen Suburb, Devoted Exclusively to Dwellings, A Place of Homes.” The historic Piedmont included Humboldt and King neighborhoods as well as modern Piedmont.

The section that would one day become Piedmont was granted to Henry Walsh by the United States Government in 1866, as a bounty claim for his military service in the Mexican-American War. After many changes in ownership between the years 1870 and 1888, the land was sold to The Investment Company, who named the parcel Piedmont due to its topography and many mountain views. That same year, The Investment Company invited the Vancouver Railroad Company to lay tracks in the area. The company also created a water tower for the benefit of the Piedmont residence which was destroyed in 1917 by an act of arson. These amenities as well as development regulations and deed restrictions created a very sought after, high quality residential neighborhood. By 1909, over 140 houses had been built. The houses were originally made to suit upper-middle class residents.
