Hosford-Abernethy Neighborhood in Portland OR

Hosford-Abernethy is a neighborhood comprised of many small neighborhoods. In the heart of the neighborhood there is a retail area that spans 5-6 blocks. History

In 1849, Gideon Tibbetts and his wife Mary arrived in Portland and claimed the abandoned tract of land, of land that would one day become Hosford-Abernethy. After clearing the area of trees and brush, Gideon began growing wheat and milling flower. In the 1870’s, as more people started moving to Portland, Tibbetts started converting his land for residential use. As Tibbetts was developing his land, the area north of his property was bought by James B. Stephens. In 1891, Stephens land was foreclosed on and the purchased by William S. Ladd. Ladd soon began to design the area changing course from the common grid pattern to new geometric shapes he had seen on a trip to Washington. Unfortunately, before his design finished construction, Ladd died. By the late 19th Century, there was a well established immigrant population in the area just south of downtown Portland. Due to land availability, the immigrants started moving to the east side, building houses in and around Ladd’s Addition. By the early 1900’s the area had become well established for residential use However, in the years after World War II, residents started moving to the suburbs leaving Hosford-Abernethy to deteriorate. By 1976, Portland residents renewed their interests in the area, and due to diminished home prices, young families were able to buy homes.

Despite the land changing hands in the past 150 years, Hosford-Abernethy continues to hold features of its original establishment while managing to create a community identity from the last 40 years of residency.
